Software Application (CSC60603)

Lecturer:Lim Tze Shwan

LEARNING OUTCOME
1. Make use of the appropriate software as a tool to complement their skills and knowledge in their discipline of study for example in the preparation of Bills of Quantities, Estimating, Tendering and Progress Payments.
2. Distinguish the different types of software programs available in the market and their limitations in usage.
3. Generate and retrieve reports for decision making.
4. Implement cost control procedures to consider alternatives and make well-reasoned recommendations promptly.

ASSIGNMENT 1 - GROUP ASSIGNMENT
The aim of project is to expose students to different types of software programs available in the construction market and their limitations in usage. Students are required to prepare a report on the functions and limitation of QS computer software in the market. My group consists of another 4 members who are Hoo Bung Jiat, Bo Yong Khong, Lee Kit Hung and I, Lai Choon Feng.

The following illustrates the five types of BIM computer software that has been studied in our report :

1. Buildsoft
2. CostX
3. Innovaya
4. Costos

In conclusion, we have recommended Buildsoft as it's the best compared with others.

ASSIGNMENT 2 - INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT
In this project, I am required to prepare a set of bill of quantities which is FRAME by using Buildsoft. The purpose of this Buildsoft project aims to develop the student’s technical knowledge in software application.

In this assignment, we were required to put theories that we have learnt during the lectures and tutorials into practice as we having the ability to interpret the functions and limitations of our chosen softwares which are available in the market and recommend our selection with supporting evidence that makes it different from other softwares.
Picture
It also requires us to use ICT and related technologies effectively. This is because we had use books as well as the internet to search and find for relevant materials that is based on each of our part in our assignment.

Lastly, being the leader of a group is not as easy as I thought it would be. It has helped me to understand my team dynamics and mobilise the power of the team in order to make this project of ours a success. I found out that cooperation between team members is definitely our key in making this assignment a  success as it allows us to understand each of our strengths and weaknesses.

Structures (BLD61203)

Lecturer: Mr.Chai Voon Chiet

LEARNING OUTCOME
Upon successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
1. Explain the action of structural elements and complete systems.
2. Recognize the perception of structure as an integral element of architecture.
3. Identify the problem encountered through the structure principles.
4. Interpret the application of the total integration of structural functions and actions with the overall design objectives.
5. Analyse and provide pragmatic solutions to problems of a technological nature.
6. Plan all aspects of design, in collaboration with structural engineers of course, in order to realize their design concepts.

INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT
This assignment requires students to solve a problem regarding truss analysis by the graphical method.

Picture
In this assignment, we were required to put theories that we have learnt during the lectures and tutorials into practice. For instance, we were required to apply our learning on graphical method to analyse the moment of the truss accordingly.
Picture
In this assignment, it allows us to develop and reinforce our thinking and problem solving skills by thinking critically in order for us to solve the truss analysis using graphical method. For example, we were required to calculate undefined informations in the drawings given by using relevant methods.

Professional Practice 1 (QSB 2615 & QSB 60604)

Lecturer: RAMAR SUBRAMANIAM

LEARNING OUTCOME
1. To understand the role and responsibility of Contractor and Consultant Quantity Surveyor in the construction industry.
2. To understand the scope of work and professional bodies of quantity surveyor.
3. To understand and develop awareness of the provision of the Standard Contract form related to construction period.
4. To understand the tender and procurement methods in the construction industry.
5. To know how to prepare tender documents and progress payments.

GROUP ASSIGNMENT
This is a group assignment that requires students to analyse the different methods of tendering and procurement methods that are being practiced in the industry for a branch campus in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.

The three tendering methods discussed in my assignment are open tendering, selective tendering and negotiated tendering. On the other hand, the two procurement methods examined are traditional procurement and design & build procurement. After detailed analysis of each methods, my group member and I have proposed the design & build procurement method, with an selective tendering system for this project.

From this module, I have a better understanding of the role and duties of Quantity Surveyor as it provides an overall overview of professional and contractual responsibilities of a consultant and contractor quantity surveyor from  the design stage till the final account stage. I am also able to identify the roles of various parties that involved in construction industry and their construction contracts and contractual obligations. In addition, I have a better understanding on the preparation of the variation order, claim for extension of time and others.

It also requires us to use ICT and related technologies effectively. This is because we
had use books as well as the internet to search and find for relevant materials that is based
on each of our part in our assignment.
Picture
In this group assignment, it has also help me to ameliorate my thinking and problem solving skills. In this particular assignment, we were required to think creatively and critically in order to understand the types of tendering and procurement method that are commonly used in the industry and apply it into our proposed project of a branch campus in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.

Estimating (QSB 2134)

Lecturer: Puan Azrina Md Yaakob

LEARNING OUTCOME
1. Identify, explain and distinguish the various terminology related to estimating, measurement and unit rates including the objectives and various components of estimating, measurement and unit rates at different stages of construction procurement.

2. Adopt a systematic approach to estimate the unit rates by considering and evaluating other factors influencing the cost of the construction components and elements.

3. Analyze the factors influencing the cost of the construction components, elements and project including pricing and preparation of tender on a measured work section of Bills of Quantities in a team or independently.

4. Analysis and justify the goodness and errors of a tender result for continuous improvement.

  ESTIMATING GROUP ASSIGNMENT

In this assignment, our task is to imagine ourselves as a contractor company competing for a project which is a single storey show house. Our company, LKH Sdn. Bhd. is lead by our Director, Mr.Yeoh Pooi Ching.

LKH Consultant Sdn. Bhd. is being shortlisted for an interview with the client. Unfortunately, our tender document lack of confirmed letter and performance bond. After this experience, we will did better in our future work.

In this assignment, also allow us to develop and reinforce our thinking and problem solving skills by thinking critically in order for us to overcome each hurdles that we faced while accomplishing the project. For instance, we were required to assume some of the misinterpretation and undefined information in the plan given by using relevant substitutes.

Picture
Since this is a group assignment, communication skills and cooperation between the members is definitely essential. As a future quantity surveyor, there will definitely be a lot of projects and tendering involvement. Henceforth, communication is key to prevent any disputes between any other construction players such as, the client, architect, engineers, contractor and sub-contractor.
